We’ve had a few problems with the run over the last week or so. All boils down to a farmyard smell (thankfully not as strong as the Wood shavings episode) due to consistent dampness in the run.
There are several reasons for this – poor drainage under the Chipped Wood, permanent in shade due to the Autumn sun, and due to the paving slabs around the circumference of the run creating a small dam.
To ease the issues, we’ve rotated the run through 180 degrees, this bring the Egg Port closer to the house, but the Cube door opener further away.
The chooks, at least at the moment, get some sun on their faces – and I can tell you they loved it – keeping out the shade and in the sunshine this morning.
The ultraviolet rays from the sun should zap a lot of bacteria, and the infra-red rays should also cook away any remaining, susceptable niffs.
Plus we’ve spaced out the slabs a little – giving a minor gap between each slab so that water can drain more quickly.
We’ll see how this goes … and if required purchase some Stalosan F which I’ll talk about should we need it.
Long terms plans … we’d like a walk-in run for the chooks – this’ll require a concrete base, some serious construction, and perhaps the removal of our Oak Tree which is looking rather unhealthy with it’s fungus covered branches.
