Frosty Mornings

Wednesday 7th January 2009 by Steve Mayne

The chooks are doing very well in the cold weather – hoovering up food like it’s going out of fashion. A bowl of warm mash is destroyed in a couple of hours …. and they then tuck into pellets, treats, and corn – I don’t think I’ve seen their crops so big before.

The only hiccup was their frozen drinking water – which I have now solved by pouring away the water at night and topping it up with fresh in the morning. Simple eh? Luckily it’s not cold enough to freeze water during the day otherwise I am not sure what we would do.

Their run bedding is a bit frozen so not much in the way of foraging possible, though Geraldine is making up for it by kicking a lot of the mash out. What a silly girl.

They are giving us 7 to 8 eggs a day so they are happy despite the cold – and most of them pop out before 11am.
