Dog Attack = Fed up chooks

Tuesday 26th January 2010 by Steve Mayne

Just over a week ago a rather bouncy Springer Spaniel managed to find itself in our garden one morning and decided to try any make friends with our chickens.

Now as you can imagine, a rather stupid dog + stupid chickens = not a good thing.

So we ended up with a set of terrified chickens, a sheepish and very lost dog, and an excellent chicken run that did it’s job and kept Tigger’s best mate on the outside.

There was no real physical damage done to the run that couldn’t be fixed in a few minutes. The chickens are another story and seem to have started a feather plucking frenzy from the stress. Plus, having just recovered from their Winter Molt they have gone off of lay, again. For the past 10 days we have been lucky to get two eggs a day.

I am not very happy, as this has cost us at least 30 eggs, that’s £7.50. The point is not only the money – it’s the inconvenience of letting people down that buy the eggs and having to ration our own consumption.

Much as I love dogs I won’t be happy to see this one again.

Mmm try losing 6 hens to a Fox, and then explain why you can't supply eggs to people who have got usedto your feathery ladies lovely eggses…

I had a lot of unhappy people…as well as the trauma of losing 6 feathery friends to deal with……

Today I had hysterical hens because a large, golden coloured rabbit got into their enclosure of electric netting….

they are really spooked by anything unusual , after Ms Fox's visit…..

Hope the dog worry setles down soonest

    Cw xx
