After a Winter of many bare bottoms … most of the chicken’s feathers have grown back. Jezabel is fully kitted out, sans her tail feathers, which makes her look rather streamlined. If she was a car she’d be a Honda Insight. Both the Honda and Jezabel are Hybrid’s of their genre. Lets move on before this ends in a poor joke.
Anyway. What seems to have worked has been keeping their egg shells, and cooking them up at Gas Mark 5 for 20 minutes, crushing and adding the cooked, crushed, shells to their food as a calcium supplement. This I believe has reduced the feather pecking, and has increased the quality of their shells.
Another improvement to the feeding ritual, is to make a goopy paste out of all the supplements with the addition of some vegtable oil, then stir this into their Layer’s Pellets. This seems to help the supplements stick to their pellets so they get to eat it whether they like it or not.
The supplements that we are currently using are Chicken Spice, Garlic Powder, Chicken Grit, and the Crushed Egg Shells. The Limestone Flour was an expensive mistake, it didn’t seem to do anything, and apparently makes the food taste fowl, er, foul.
Taking of foul food, I made the mistake of handling the Garlic Powder then eating some sandwiches later on with the same fingers .. I now know why it says, ‘Not for Human Consumption’ on the supplement label. Yuck :-/
