Outback U-Grill Compact BBQ Review

Wednesday 9th June 2010 by Steve Mayne

Now to improve our Staycation choices I decided to spend some hard earned cash on the Outback U-Grill Compact BBQ, which retails for less than £45.  The BBQ is powered by a mini-sized Gas Cylinder.  It is claimed that 90 minutes of cook time is possible from each cylinder.

So what you get is a BBQ in a easy to carry box:

It comes with a Griddle Plate (though a bumpy or grooved surface would have been preferred):

As well as the more traditional Grill:

So what do I trial … well breakfast of course, with the obligatory cup of tea and freshly laid eggs:

The sausages cooked quickly and easily, the bacon as well.  No problems whatsoever.  Clearly you can’t cook Lamb Shanks on this.  Burgers, chicken wings, vegetables, sausages, and thin pork chops should present no problem at all.

The BBQ has a central tray that is easy to remove to clean off the fat that has dripped down.   The Grill itself just pops out for cleaning.  If you need to get into the nooks and crannies, the two bars that protect the gas element from fat are easily removed with a screwdriver, you can then get in to remove any other mess with a piece of kitchen paper.

My cooking was done in calm conditions, though I don’t foresee too many problems in light winds.

In summary, probably a better buy than a disposable BBQ as there is more control, and the heat is instant.  What is is more you can boil a kettle or use a frying pan if you desire, by placing it directly onto the grill.
