Just a quick update, and apologies for not updating the blog for a long time. Our household is the lucky winner and now we have three children, of three and under, so they keep us busy.
- Vegetables have been very good this year, including cucumbers which we have had 20+ without any problems.
- Beans, carrotts, onions have also been a bumper crop
- Our chickens are now approaching their third year, and the eggs are intermittent … they are no longer paying their way with a couple, or less, eggs per day.. We are in a bit of a quandary to do with the rest of the chickens as they seem spent.
- We had to dispatch one of the chooks due to her laying thin shelled eggs for over two years … she had taken to eating them and causing a huge mess in the nesting box. It was over for her in moments using the ‘broomstick method’ of dislocating the neck and severing the spinal cord. She did not suffer. It took us a long time to come to the decision and it was very difficult. For those that are considering criticising, if she’d been a hen in a commercial unit she’d have been dispatched at the start of her life.
That is all for now. I hope to make more updates in the future.
