Recycling our Kitchen Food

Monday 7th February 2011 by Steve Mayne

During the time we did not have any chickens – one thing that was very apparent  was the amount of uneaten food that we had to throw away day due to unavoidable waste.

It is a joy to be able to finally recycle our waste kitchen fruit, veg, cereal and dairy — as a supplement feed to the chickens in the afternoon – they literally do ‘flock’ and race over to the Omlet Grub that we put the food that would otherwise gone into landfill.

Something that isn’t going so well is the Galvanized poultry feeder we purchased.  The feeder takes up to 20kg of feed – but the Mash is getting stuck and not flowing through when the feed in the bowl has been eaten.  This has resulted in quite hungry chickens!  We have one more ‘adjusting’ notch available at which point we may need to think of something else.

Just found your blog, and have had a good read through your past postings. I was especially interested to see your amazing time lapse footage of the fox attack. I'm wondering if I should try to set up something like this too! Kathy
