Pirates & Forts and Green Monsters & Worms….Birthday Cakes!

Monday 16th September 2013 by Amanda Mayne Leave a Comment

Cakes! It wouldn’t be a birthday without that all important birthday cake!

We have 3 boys and so far we’ve had our fair share of birthdays already. As far as cakes are concerned, supermarkets have a pretty good selection. However, the cakes may look good and save you a huge amount of time, but the taste leaves little to be desired.

‘Proper’ cake making for our sons all started with my middle son, Dominic for his 3rd Birthday. Fed up with synthetic tasting cakes, Steve and I wanted to do something a little more personal and has fond childhood memories of his mum making him a ‘fort cake’ which he was keen to replicate. So, between the both of us, we cobbled together a chocolate cake, chocolate butter cream, icing (Yummy!) and various chocolate fingers/kitkats and pirate candles.

Not too bad for a first attempt.

By his 4th, Dominic had become a little more specific in his choice of cake. He wanted, and I quote, “A green monster cake with worms coming out of his mouth“. Not wanting to disappoint Dominic and pretty sure that my local supermarket didn’t stock that exact style of cake, I set to work researching.

After a few hours of looking through Google images, I had a few ideas with which to work with.

I bought some sweet worms and a small packet of white ready-roll icing and some green and red food colouring. I made some more buttercream icing and  this time I coloured it green. I cut up cakes and roughly made it in the style of a monster head. The great thing with monsters is that you have pretty much got poetic licence and they can look like whatever you like! (Well, as long at it was green and worms coming out of the mouth…you get the idea!)

Dominic was thrilled and this set the benchmark for the next birthday…Ashley’s 6th. At least I had six months!
