By Ashley’s 6th birthday he was a little boy obsessed with all things “Ben 10”. There was only one cake he was going to want. My previous foray into cake making had so far been cakes made with buttercream icing and were pretty simple. This time I needed to enter the world of fondant icing.
Once again my research led to me looking on-line and adding some ideas to my new Pinterest board. This was great as I could put all ideas of how it looked in one place. A discovered a local cake supply business situated in the local industrial estate and bought my ready-roll icing in the colours I required.
Firstly I covered the chocolate cake in jam to help the fondant ‘stick’. I think you are supposed to use apricot jam, but I only had strawberry!
I opened the fondant that I bought (3 packets, if I recall correctly) and kneaded them all together…
Then I prepped the counter top ready to roll out the fondant. I was working on the basis of pastry rolling and used icing sugar. I have since found a much better way to roll fondant (remember, this was my first time using fondant and on a very steep learning curve!) (N.B the better way to roll fondant will be saved for a later cake post!)
Rolling on the counter with icing sugar was not very easy and the fondant is very sticky. Also, rolling black fondant onto white icing didn’t make it look great either. However I persevered – I had a little boy to please…
Finally I managed to cover the cake. Note: Fondant icing is NOT like dough!
Ta-da!
Now the ‘fun’ bit of decorating could begin. I had a rough idea of what the ‘omnitrix’ watch looked like and went with that.
and then, finally..
I purchased some Ben 10 mini-figures from ebay (they were a welcome addition to the toy box too!).
Ashley was thrilled and that was good enough for me and for a first attempt, I was happy. I had learnt a great deal and would be ready for my next challenge! I wonder what Dominic would like for his 5th birthday?!
