The shop on the corner of Wellington Way used to be called “Hantoy” which sold toys in the 1970’s to the 1990’s. Ironically a couple of doors down there is now another toy shop, The Rainbow Toy Shop which has sadly just announced it’s pending closure.
Then, for many years this shop was “West Chemist” which has moved further down London Road towards the Shell garage. Then the unit was empty for a while and was then taken on by an independent retailer.
This new independent, “Toyz n Gadgets” only lasted just a months before it closed. Toyz N Gadgets opened January 2013 and then closed a few months later in April 2013. Again, it laid empty for a while.
However there is now a new retail venture called “Bibs and Bobs” billed as ‘The One-Stop Baby Shop’ selling baby/toddler clothes and essentials.
Bibs and Bobs have made use of the previous owner’s shop fittings and looks very full of lovely looking stock. As our youngest is now 4 years old, it’s unlikely we’ll need to use the shop, but as a baby boom appears to be going on and new family homes being built pretty much everywhere, they may have tapped into Waterlooville’s flourishing baby market.
The window looks full of stock and perhaps offers something slightly different to what the big national retail establishments of Waterlooville can offer. Let’s hope this is one shop that stays open for the foreseeable future. Good luck to them.
What are your memories of Hantoy? Do you have experiences of the retailers that were located here?
