Then & Now: Wadhams, Wellington Retail Park and Maurepas Way

Tuesday 26th August 2014 by Amanda Mayne

Continuing our series on Then & Now here at About Waterlooville.

These pictures were only taken in 1998 and much has changed to Maurepus Way and Wellington Retail Park.

Maurepas Way

At the end of Maurepas Way in 1998, you can see green farmer’s fields. Obviously now in 2014, this is Berewood a huge, new housing development. To be honest, this development has been in ‘the pipeline’ for as long as I can remember (mid 1980s?) so not really surprise that it’s there now. Maurepas Way hasn’t changed too much, but with road-works continuing we will be seeing more changes in the coming months, including a bridge.

Wellington Retail Park

Below is a photo taken at the same time as the one above and clearly shows how the Retail Park has changed over the last 16 years.

There is the ‘Wadhams’ garage on the right, which I think at the time sold second-hand cars? Then on the left, the ugly brown buildings of Courts and the DIY store, with Halfords in the background

Looking at the same view in 2014, the ugly brown retail units have been smarted up and changed. There is still a furniture store but now DFS, the DIY shop has been renovated and changed into two more shops: Home Bargains and Harveys. To the right, the ‘main’ block of Wellington Retail Park is now Matalan, Argos, Brantano, SCS, M&S Simply Food and TK Max. Obviously the new Sainsbury’s is popping up in the background.

Do you remember the Wadham’s garage and the ‘new’ retail shops appearing? Only is the past 16 years, Waterlooville has changed so much – what next for the following 16 years?

Does anyone have any pictures of Hambledon Rd before Maurepas Way was built?
