Blockbusters went into administration in early 2013 and despite attempts to keep the business the viable, the shop in Cowplain which had avoided the first round of closures, shut down permanently in November of the same year.
Many of the former Blockbuster stores were sold to Morrisons to become ‘M’ Local Stores; in this case, Cowplain will not be will not be inflicted with a Morrisons M Local, well not yet! Instead, the site of the old Blockbuster shop is being converted into an Ice Cream Parlour, or should I say, “Parlor”. The parlour will run by the Portsmouth Steak and Lobster House company, Relentless. We believe the name for the for this grand new venture is : Relentless Hundreds and Thousands Ice Cream Parlor.
The new Ice Cream Parlour will not only sell ice cream and other chilled dairy-based sweet treats, you also be able to purchase waffles, crepes, baguettes, coffee/tea and cold drinks.
You can hardly fail to notice the prevalence of Ice Cream Parlours growing in popularity over the last few years, such as the franchise chains Scoops and Sprinkles. A giant plate of ice cream, waffles, crepes, chocolate and all things sweet is a decadent and self-indulgent treat that most people find hard not to enjoy.
The question is, is Cowplain ready for Ice Cream? With Scoops and Sprinkles, there’s an excuse to go out see the sights, shop till you drop, and finish the day with a huge plate of ice cream. Cowplain is not the most glamorous of locations – and the new parlour will be between a carpet shop and a ladies-only gym. What a terrible thing to do to those ladies who are trying to control their curves! The new venue should fair well with the passing school trade; and might be just the place for school aged kids to hang out since McDonalds Waterlooville closed.
Whatever our opinion on the suitability of an Ice Cream parlour in Cowplain, at least another retail unit will be occupied; the old Blockbuster store has been empty since the closing down sale.
Hopefully the Relentless Ice cream parlour won’t go the same way as other recent Cowplain food ventures Bronco‘s and the recently closed Cowplain Chip Shop. Broncos was open for three months before closing and Cowplain Chip Shop was open for four months before closing.
