We’re going back a bit here…but as a child in the 1980s I remember being dragged round a garden centre that was situated where Wickes and Topps Tiles is now, in the grounds of a very large house. The house was pulled down to make way for a Kwik Save (remember that?) and Wickes.
Doing a bit of research, I have found that there was an big, old Victorian house here called Broadlands Mansion. It was occupied by John Hulbert’s daughter (the Hulbert family bought the Stakes estate) and it was converted into a garden centre in the 1970s.
Rockville Drive, was built later to relive London Road South of traffic and as a precursor to the pedestrianisation of the rest of London Road, I think in the early 2000s?
Do you remember the old house and garden centre? Even at such a young age, I thought it was a shame that the house had been demolished and replaced by a massive, ugly retail development. There’s not much of ‘old’ Waterlooville left.
