For the last day of half-term we were without the children for a few hours and we decided – seeing as it was a glorious and unseasonably warm day in October – to make the most of it and pop out for a bite to eat.
We thought of going to a pub, but we wanted something a little more informal.
In the end, we decided to get Fish & Chips. There’s nothing better than eating freshly-made fish and chips straight from the wrapper!
So, where to go? Within walking distance there is Royals Fish & Chips in Waterlooville, The Lobster Pot opposite The Spotted Cow in Cowplain, and Banks Fish & Chips.
As the day was so lovely and unseasonably warm, we thought it would be an excellent opportunity to eat outside. There are plenty of benches scattered around Cowplain shopping area, so we decided on Banks.
It”s a fairly new chip shop for the area – it opened in November 2012 and we have bought Fish & Chips here on a couple of previous occasions. Earlier visits have always found the staff welcoming and friendly. On this visit, however, the staff appeared to be lacking in smiles; they were perfectly polite, just no ‘friendliness’ or chit chat.
We ordered two regular cod and chips and as usual the food was cooked fresh for us.
We sat and waited in the very clean and pleasant restaurant and it was reasonably busy, with people both sitting down to eat and ordering a take-away like us.
After a quick 5 minutes, our number was called and presented with the meal in a bag. Again, no “thank you very much” or “hope to see you soon” or something of similar ilk. Manners cost nothing.
Anyway, this is my meal:
This is my wife’s meal – her fish was in two pieces hence the funny looking cod:
We sat in the sunshine chomping away on our lunch and ‘reviewed’ the meal we were eating:
We both thought that the portions were very generous – and we were both very full. Yes, it’s true that potatoes don’t cost that much – I don’t think I’d be able to eat a large portion of chips with a large piece of cod. The meal was presented in a nice cardboard box, which made it easy to eat from and it also kept the food warm . The fish was amazing – perfectly cooked, it was top notch, I can honestly say that I’ve never had better. The chips were quite dull, they weren’t offensive, but we’ve had better; they just didn’t have a proper potato flavour.
Banks has a mediocre website but it has not been updated since the Fish & Chip Shop opened – the menu is out of date. The Fish and Chip Shop also has no engagement with social media and no Facebook Page.
All in all, our experience won’t put us off ordering again in the future as they provided a reasonable fish and chip meal. Perhaps they were just having an off day?
