Not only did the Waterlooville Household Waste and Recycling Centre get a posh new name but it got a posh new site when it moved early 2013. It’s previous site on Aston Road was cramped and highly congested and not really a pleasant experience to use. Aston Road was closed down to eventually make way for Sainsbury’s new petrol station.
The location of the new centre is further along Hambledon Road towards Denmead at the edge of the new Wellington Park housing development at Old Park Farm. I’ve been there a few times since its opening and its a vast improvement on the old site. As the previous dump was pretty much always busy and queued up almost daily, I really didn’t like using it.
After the school run on Thursday, I loaded up my boot with stuff that I couldn’t give away or recycle by other means.
Finding it is relatively easy as its well sign posted after you’ve passed Wellington Park, the road comically winds round nothing in particular – presumably it will wind ‘around’ something one day!
It’s about 3 or 4 times as big as the previous centre and it’s well laid out with space to queue on busy days. Importantly, this centre has been designed so that there is no interruption for skips to be changed, which is why the previous tip always had a queue.
When I pulled up I was immediately asked if I needed help and was helpfully told where my stuff could go. The skips are clearly labelled and easy to get to – if you have anything heavy, the workers will willingly give you a hand. Unlike the old site in Waterlooville, it features a ‘split level’ arrangement so that you don’t have to climb steps to get to the recycling skips.
Apart from the large skips, you can also take your bottles, old chip pan oil, batteries and pretty much everything that can be recycled here. (There’s a detailed list on the Hampshire County Council website) There is even a ‘shop’ selling the stuff that people have dumped that was too good to chuck away!
It was almost a pleasant experience going to the tip – and driving out it’s a great feeling that another car load of junk has gone from the house!
