The Lobster Pot Fish & Chips Cowplain – Review

Friday 9th January 2015 by Steve Mayne

The Lobster Pot Cowplain is a Fish & Chip Shop located opposite The Spotted Cow pub on the A3. This takeaway has been located here for as long as I can remember.

There were no nearby rivals for The Lobster Pot until Banks Fish and Chip shop opened a new take away in November 2012. Banks Fish and Chip shop is located in the former HSBC Bank unit which is on the main parade of Cowplain shops.

In October 2014 we visited and reviewed Banks Fish & Chips in Cowplain and the blog post elicited some interesting comments.

It seemed only fair to review The Lobster Pot under similar conditions, and to try to put an end to the debate, which is the best chippie?

The lobster pot cowplain menu

So over the Christmas Holidays my wife and our youngest son travelled to Cowplain to pick up an order of cod and chips to feed two hungry adults and three hungry children.

The staff at The Lobster Pot were friendly and welcoming, and gave our son a lollipop whilst the order was prepared. We also got a thank you, a goodbye and a smile when the the order was handed over.

We ordered three large cod with three large portions chips. The photo below is one portion of the order. The food was cooked freshly for us and was piping hot.

Our boys said the food was delicious, as you can see from the photo below they are raring to get stuck in.

We shared the takeaway meal between the five of us, and we struggled to eat all of it.

Both the fish and the chips were great. There is nothing to complain about, everything tasted exactly as it should. We also found the prices to be competitive. There is no question that we’ll visit again.

Our only complaint is that The Lobster Pot does not have a website or any social media. Even an inexpensive website is better than no website at all. There is nothing more irritating than wanting to visit a shop, takeaway, pub or venue to be completely in the dark as to the opening and serving times.

At the time of writing the opening times at The Lobster Pot are:

So which is the best Cowplain Fish and Chip shop? Well there are a few more to takeaways to visit, and perhaps we’ll get around to these later this year.

This was a firm family favourite when I was growing up through the nineties although I seem to remember fishing nets hung from the ceiling, filled with interesting items that sadly don’t appear to feature in the photo so I guess those are gone! I’m really glad it’s still there – do the same people still run it? I’m vegetarian so don’t venture in many fish shops these days but may well pop back for nostalgia sake when I’m in the area :-)

Defo The Lobster Pot! They are so friendly in there and they always remember me. We don’t do Takeaways often. I’ve tried Banks (Hated there saveloy’s, don’t eat fish) and the one on Milton Rd shops. Chips were so greasy. We always go back to the lobster pot.

Lobster pot is ours as you said the prices are great, the sizes of the portions are brilliant and the food is how it should be. I’ve tried banks and they are good too I just wish they would lower their prices and make the portions bigger.

Prefer banks. Easier to park. Big portions. Shop nice and clean. Don’t mind a short wait. Just don’t go on a Friday teatime! 😄

    Hi Ray,

Why are the reviews pointless? Would it be better to have not written anything at all and just posted a photograph of the food?

How are either of the experiences unfair? We wrote what happened in both cases.

As for ringing and asking when they are open, well how do I find the number to ring them? We don’t own a telephone directory or yellow pages having opted out from receiving them many years ago.

Having a website is important, we’ve owned this one since 1999, and I have been on-line since 1994.

      Hi Ray,

There are a tons of review websites out there with pretty much the same thing. TripaAdvisor, Yellow Pages etc. Plus these types of discussions are happening privately and publicly on sites such as Twitter, Facebook etc. Reviews can even be left on the social media pages of businesses.

What is unfair is when there is no ability for a business to respond. The comments are open on our blog posts, and if anyone isn’t happy with a review they can always contact us via our website.

We have had experiences where the whole thing was just shocking. We haven’t, and won’t make those experiences public.

As for being controversial, we’re all spoon fed a diet of rose-tinted local news and views from local government, councillors, MPs and the media and it is just so dull!

Thank you for your thoughts and please keep reading :)
