Waterlooville Precinct’s Christmas Tree

Sunday 9th August 2015 by Steve Mayne

Some of you may be aware that in previous years Havant, Emsworth and Leigh Park precincts have all had a Christmas Tree funded by the Council. Waterlooville Town centre however has been overlooked by the ‘powers that be’ and has missed out on this annual tradition.

Fret no more … I am pleased to announce that due to the efforts of Jackie Buckley from the Waterlooville Community Forum Events Team, Havant Borough Council, and County Councillor Robin Mcintosh, Waterlooville Precinct will have its very own Christmas Tree!

To help support the work being done by Jackie, a petition was set up by Kath Crockford from Coffeeville (Coffeeville is an independent coffee shop located in The Boulevard). Kath has asked us to pass on her thanks the +120 of her customers for signing the petition.

Some fund-raising is still required and will be 50% matched by HBC. If you as a resident or business want to put a few quid into the kitty, please sign up to our mailing list to keep up to date with the latest news.

P.S. Well done EVERYONE!

That’s good to hear but I thought it was stopped because of vandalism in previous years. It will be lovely to see one back in the town.

Doesn’t seem fair that other towns get theirs free but Waterlooville has to raise half the money. 😏😏

Hi Jacqui, when the precinct was put in, the pit (a steel hole) required for the Xmas tree was overlooked and wasn’t replaced. Doh!

I thought there was a metal cover that had a quote in it and that was where the tree went? Outside natwest. But there was a tree further up in previous years too. Near Halifax.

Hi Claire, certainly is a step in the right direction though? I believe the other towns have had to find a contribution themselves, via a councillor, the local businesses, or from collecting money in some other manner. Benefit of the tree … it is there all day, unlike the lights which can only be on when most of the shops are shut!

Claire, you are right … my rusty memory on a Sunday morning … the one by Halifax is apparently under or near the bandstand?

Yes I think so. The cover said something about seasons. Can’t remember exact wording.

Well done to all involved. It’s not Christmas in a town without a lovely Christmas tree.

Many, many years ago the tree between Weston Harts and Style always used to have Christmas lights. And loads of the shops used to have trees in those little iron brackets on thei walls. Many years ago, when Waterlooville had shops.

Yay. Waterlooville needs something pretty at Christmas to bring people in, been looking like Scrooge was in charge recently.

Well done!!! I remember the days when Waterlooville had a nice big Christmas tree and all of the shops had a small tree above their shop name with lights. Those were the days :-)
