Waterlooville’s Christmas has started!
We popped up to Waterlooville Precinct yesterday to attend the Waterlooville Christmas Lights Switch On. This event was organised by the Waterlooville Forum Events Team – a small, but dedicated band of volunteers who managed to organise a wonderful Christmas event on a shoe-string budget (well, actually no budget). There are people who care about the town we live in and genuinely willing to help this little corner of Hampshire.
The weather was dry, but a crisp 3°C centigrade – a perfect winter’s evening and very Christmas-y. We arrived around 4pm just as things were starting up and did a little essential shopping whilst we were in town. It was great to see so many shops open alongside all the events happing in the main precinct. The organisers were keen to involve the whole of Waterlooville centre – with it’s very long ‘high street’ area and precinct off-shoots i.e. Wellington Way and The Boulevard.
The event kicked off with Training Ship Actives’s Marching Band with school children following with their lantern parade around the whole precinct; Caterpillar Crafts the keystone organiser of the fabulous lanterns. The light switch on by Havant’s Mayor, Father Christmas and Elf was made even more memorable by Waterlooville’s Swiss Cottage champion, compère James Alderson from Comedy All Stars.
Hot food provided by The Wright Choice Family Butchers, with a Hog Roast, The Butler’s Pantry and The Burrito Man. There was also a mini-funfair and stalls selling crafts and gifts scattered up and down the precinct. Children could have their photograph taken with characters from Frozen by Richard James Photography. Obviously, Santa was also there with his sleigh, plus there was plenty more going on.
Two of our children were poorly and so unfortunately were we’re able to stay until the end of the event, but a massive thumbs up for a very well organised event that for me, has started my Christmas. Well done Waterlooville!
