No Good Intent for Horndean’s Colonial Bar – Demolition in Progress

Sunday 21st February 2016 by Steve Mayne

I am sorry to say there is No Good Intent for Horndean’s Colonial Bar from the landowner; despite a number of businesses offering to take on and renovate the building the landowners have gone ahead with demolition of one of Horndean’s most visible +180 year old iconic structures.

Back in the 1970’s the Colonial Bar was called The Good Intent, and way, way before that (1830’s) it was named The Woodman. The Good Intent in the 70’s was a family restaurant and during its history passed through The Schooner Inn and The Berni Inn chains.

The landowner’s current intention is to allow the land to remain empty. We don’t expect any planning permission to be submitted until the 2020’s due Horndean having met it’s house building quota for the foreseeable future.

The only remaining Horndean pubs will be The Ship and Bell and The Red Lion.

Horndean has lost 60% of it’s pubs since 2009.

Current trading is no measure to whether a pub is closed by the landowner, so which Horndean public house is next for closure?

Diana I loved the Good Intent as well. I am absolutely gutted this part of Horndean’s history has been erased.

Great memories of 1950s and early 60s when it was a Watneys pub with a “Red Barrel Club” that went on outings, kids as well

A shame it’s going, but for some time it’s been an eye sore. But it won’t look much better being left as derelict land for some years to come!

Horrendous decision. When the children were young I took them all here and before that Terry and I used it. It was called The Schooner Inn then. It us such a shame to wipe out 150 years without any productive replacement for the space. Change is always inevitable but it send they have not thought of a future for this space. A great shame.

From my experience I’m sure this is just an oversight and the council were probably just distracted with a wine and cheese party and missed the appeals from the public.

Hi James in fairness to Horndean Parish Council, who are rather better at engaging than some other councils, a representative of HPC went on record to say they tried but there was nothing that could be done to prevent the demolition as it wasn’t original enough :(

    • James Michael Alderson says

      Monday 14th March 2016 at 18:27

That’s fair enough I guess. I mean, it couldn’t possibly be the council that approved the changes to the original structure in the first place eh? Circle of life.

    • About Waterlooville says

      Monday 14th March 2016 at 18:27

Here’s the thing, the land owner is such a big player they haven’t and won’t for some time put in planning permission to build anything to replace what was there and they didn’t need to get planning permission to demolish what was there … crazy eh?

  25. Sue Humphrey says

    Sunday 21st February 2016 at 13:56

I grew up in Horndean and it looks regional enough to me not much had changed from regional picture there knocking down all the history of Horndean all that’s left is pictures so sad
