The Good Intent Horndean … GONE!

Saturday 12th March 2016 by Steve Mayne

I am sorry to report that the building that was the Good Intent / Colonial Bar has well and truly GONE!

It took less than a month to demolish one of Horndean’s landmark buildings. 185 years of history gone in almost a blink.

At the time of posting, planning permission to build something new hasn’t been submitted, so expect to see the sight below for the foreseeable future…

Demolished Good Intenet Horndean

It’s so sad when history is destroyed like this. It’s still sad when you walk past the site where Swiss Cottage was. Humans can be so destructive

It is very sad that a building of that age has now gone. The owners will have had it demolished to save money as it would have had to pay rates on the building , but doesn’t have to pay anything on cleared land. They will obtain planning permission for whatever then either build or sell the land with permission.

Looks better already. I don’t understand all the sentimental stuff it was a decapitated pub and had been for as long as I can remember. If people were that bothered about it they should have used the facilities when it was open and made sure it was profitable.

Didn’t shut due to profit James, just by the way. Our 10 year lease expired, my mum retired and the brewery wanted too much to renovate parts of the building with the new buyer as it was derelict.
Many people each weekend supported us and we had some cracking memories made. Might Of been a sh*thole but it was ours n we all loved it ✌️ just wanna make that clear 😘

It was a mixed bag. Some good memories there, some bad. It wasn’t massively profitable, it scraped by a lot of the time. It managed to pay wages, but wasn’t profitable enough to cover the costs needed to renovate and keep the building up to the standards needed for the lease to be taken over. It needed to be a lot more profitable to make it a viable option for a new lease – it wasn’t. When you’re that close to a venue, and attached to it because you view it as your own, it’s hard to step back and view it critically. I think those running it lost that ability, so perhaps didn’t expect the inevitable outcome when the lease expired.

It wouldn’t be as bad if we had any hope of it being replaced by a building(s) of any visual appeal or style.

What a shame – I can remember having a birthday party in the pub’s little hall out the back in the car park when I was teenager (about 1972-3). I think we played ‘Spin the bottle’!! That was way back when it was the original ‘Good Intent’ pub before it became the ‘Schooner Inn’ (Berni Inn – Beefeater type). This picture is from 1910 – think it was tea rooms or something back then.

Yes it is rubbish isn’t it. My money gets spent elsewhere now, probably the same as others, and that can’t help the situation?

Borne and bred in Waterlooville many years ago when it was the Village. Visited the place recently and i think the whole place needs demolishing now !
