Waterlooville Precinct requests divine intervention?

Thursday 31st March 2016 by Steve Mayne

We’re not sure what this “Christian” banner on the Bandstand (also known as the Smoking Shelter) is about, perhaps Waterlooville Precinct has resorted to asking for divine intervention?

Feel free to add a comment with detail about the banner, and if you can come up with a witty caption – fire away!

It was here for the service on Good Friday, all the churches in Waterlooville joined together for the Easter Service.

The Easter season isn’t actually finished yet, though I can see how people might get confused as to why it is still there x

The sheer amount of people in the photo proving how relevant Christianity is…

    • Valerie Davies says

There was a very big crowd on Good Friday for the service. If Christianity isn’t relevant for you, that’s fine – your life – your decisions, but don’t knock other people’s faith.

Free speech when it suits eh? Whilst my views are very anti religious, I wouldn’t want gatherings such as this to stop, as I actually believe in free speech, irrespective of whether the majority believe it’s nonsense or not.

I saw this yesterday and was going to post a, query about it here.

It struck me as being rather rude towards (a majority, nowadays?) who are not Christian. Maybe that’s the point: being in a minority they have to join together ;)

Maybe more appropriate to hang this sign on a church, though.

I take the previous comment that it might be about Good Friday… and if so, time to take it down off of public/council property now, isn’t it?

    • Matt Charman says

      Friday 1st April 2016 at 00:56

I like the idea of putting other religious signs up. Let’s try Pagan, Islamic, Kemetic, Luciferin, and see how the Christians feel. If they object, then the point is made. After all, if people should be proud of their faith, and openly allowed to celebrate it in public, why should that only be Christians? Maybe the Humanists and Atheists should get in on the act too!

I’m sure you have all enjoyed the extra few holiday you’ve just had for Easter. In case you’ve forgotten, Easter, like Christmas is one on the Christian festivals we celebrate in this Christian country where EVERYONE gets a holiday, not just the practicing Christians. The banner was put up by the joint Christians on Waterlooville for the good Friday procession through the town centre to mark one of the holy days of Easter. If you are not a Christian, please have the decency not to try to ridicule us. At least you get a few days holiday out of it.

    • Matt Charman says

      Thursday 31st March 2016 at 23:56

Actually, Easter, like Christmas, has pagan origins, not Christian.

    • Matt Charman says

      Friday 1st April 2016 at 00:56

Yes, that means Christians should thank Pagans for the holidays… #JustSaying

    • Richard Handy says

      Friday 1st April 2016 at 00:56

Matt Charman , yes, the Christmas festival date was possibly dated on older pagan winter solstice festivals but the Christian Christmas celebration is most certainly not based on a pagan festival. As for Easter, that’s a purely Christian festival, the date of which is set by the Jewish celebration of the Passover which goes back several thousand years. Maunday Thursday and Good Friday happened at the time of the Passover, hence the date is set at that time.

    • Matt Charman says

      Friday 1st April 2016 at 01:57

No, you should read up about the goddess Ishtar, which is also where the whole connection to rabbits and eggs comes from. It’s also the birth of the new year in Pagan traditions.

Most of the symbology used in Christmas celebrations has NOTHING to do with Christianity. Jesus wasn’t even born in December, more like July/August.

      What about the cross?

    • Richard Handy says

      Friday 1st April 2016 at 11:59

Hmm, yes Matt, the bible doesn’t actually state when Jesus was born but he was certainly not born in December. Modern theology places it most likely in Autumn or Spring given the other events mentioned at the time such as shepherds in fields etc. He was also most likely born about 5BC.

Shadow of the Hare??? Don’t remember reading anything about hares, rabbits or eggs at “Easter” in the bible. In fact the bible doesn’t even mention the word Easter either. According to the Bible, Jesus’ death and resurrection occurred around the time of the Jewish Passover, which was celebrated on the first full moon following the vernal equinox. All scholars agree That the name Easter has pagan origins. This name is never used in the original Scriptures, nor is it ever associated biblically with the death and resurrection of Jesus. In many Christian churches it is still referred to Resurrection Sunday.

It isn’t a ‘Christian’ banner, it is a Christian banner.

  17. Isobel Flynn says

    Friday 1st April 2016 at 16:58

What a shame that so many people will knock something they don’t understand, have not bothered to ask about and yet come up with suggestions for improvement! We have celebrated Easter, not the Easter Bunny, recently. As it is the most important time in Christian faith and culture, it was celebrated in a public way in Waterlooville, as it has been for many years. Christians from Anglican, Baptist, Catholic and other churches joined together on Good Friday for a Walk of Witness along London Road, into the precinct and on to the Parish Church of St George. In the precinct we assembled around the place in the picture, sang some hymns and listened to Bible readings about the torture and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. For those involved and for many passers-by it was a moving and special event. We must thank those in Waterlooville who allowed us to use this public space and put up a temporary banner. Thank God that we live in a country where we do not get imprisoned, disappeared or executed for our Christian beliefs. Oh yes, and if we like the idea of people being given second chances after making mistakes, known as the forgiveness of sins, that comes directly out of Christ’s teaching. Respect for the beliefs of others is part of our national identity and long may it be so.

    • Richard Handy says

      Friday 1st April 2016 at 19:57

Isobel, I couldn’t agree more. It’s tolerance we need, not knocking one another because we either don’t agree or don’t understand

Star Wars predates the Bible, Star Wars took place 200 million years ago. You may be aware of the LP album, “Christmas in the Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album” based on, can you guess it, Christmas (link below). Therefore Christmas took place for the first time 199,998,000 years before the event mentioned in the Bible and is therefore originally Rebel Alliance tradition. I glad to have cleared up any confusion. My work here is done.
