PamPurredPets Waterlooville Closed

Wednesday 6th July 2016 by Steve Mayne

Following a closing down sale, PamPurredPets in Waterlooville precinct has shut it’s doors. The PamPurredPets business was acquired by rivals Pets Corner. On acquisition Pets Corner closed the unprofitable stores which included Waterlooville branch. Our thoughts go to the staff impacted by the closure.

Closing unprofitable stores is a recurring theme for Waterlooville; other high street brands that have left or are leaving Waterlooville due to poor retail performance include McDonalds, The Post Office, and Store Twenty One.

Not a Monty Python fan? I was hoping for, “All right then, if he’s restin’, I’ll wake him up!”

Another nail in the coffin. It’s all so depressing. We always try to shop locally, making use of as many independent stores as possible. I know other towns such as Winchester, Petersfield and Chichester are considered more affluent and have thriving town centres but surely with so many new houses being built in our region, where is the stimulus to encourage better shops?

I think to answer your question, folks either shop elsewhere, or use the retail park? Well retail parks, as a new retail park is being built on the former BAE site. It is very depressing I really wish I had something positive to report about the precinct; don’t shoot the messenger.

I lived in Waterlooville for eighteen years and still shop there occasionally although not quite as often as before. The only reason I shop there at all now is to go to my hairdresser, Hair Ott Waterlooville and my optician. If either of these places closed down then I’d have no real reason to shop there any more. Retail parks are all very well, but when 99% of the shops in the precinct have closed down what’s going to happen to the town centre then? It’ll be like a ghost town :( .

There’s nothing left for the growing population of Waterlooville. Such a shame. Hate going to Portsmouth.

It’s about time the council did something about this. They were absolutely insistent on ‘improving’ Waterlooville by building on every single stretch of green belt and over populating the place to such a degree that it is no longer a charming little town but is, instead, a mini city – nice job HBC. Surely, they must have sufficient intelligence to realise that if they insist on doing this to towns, they need to ensure that the shopping centre in that town is up to the job – clearly Waterlooville in it’s current form, is not. I don’t know what their mindset is or the problem for many of the businesses being unprofitable unless of course the council is being too greedy and demanding high business rates (some business owners in waterlooville tell me that this is indeed the case). Whatever the cause, they seriously need to get with the programme. Get some decent, interesting shops in the centre, I would love to suggest some small boutique independents of all kinds, however, with HBC’s demand for business rates, it’s unlikely the smaller concerns could afford it. Sort it HBC – it’s part of what you’re being paid for!

HBC don’t set the business rates, rates are set by parliament, other councils have been ‘creative’ in this manner to mitigate the fees paid. A good percentage of blame is on the landlord situation, many are absent and don’t care about filling the empty premises, in the grand scheme of their multi-million pound portfolios Waterlooville is merely a speck of dust not worthy of marketing. Blame cannot be attributed to the shopper/residents or internet shopping, other towns do well. There are lots of factors, and it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Fingers crossed I’ll still be running the blog by the time things do improve …

The buildings have been been sold off for flats that’s why the shops are closing

That’s possibly the best summary I’ve seen of the situation.

  12. Claire Thomas says

    Wednesday 6th July 2016 at 21:56

This is exactly what they are trying to do. Increase the rents so that business’s can no longer see the point of trading in the ville. One by one they are closing. Once they’re all gone the precinct will be bulldozed over, more retirement homes and postage stamp sized houses will be built on it. Sad times x

  13. Lianne Perkins says

    Wednesday 6th July 2016 at 21:56

More people would shop if there actual shops there at the moment it’s just mainly coffee shops and charity which both have their place and need but for the consumer a wider variety of shops more make the precinct more user friendly and more affluent

Can anyone confirm if the internet is available in Petersfield, Chichester and Emsworth? The shops in these towns seem fine. If indeed these towns do have internet access then we can let internet shopping off the hook!

Tbh I thought the post office would relocate (again!) Thought it was the main one for the area especially as a lot of the small branches closed fairly recently. I guess the ones in the co-op stores are more profitable (hopefully!) 📮✉

    • About Waterlooville says

      Thursday 7th July 2016 at 07:56

The branches inside a store generally are run as a franchise and don’t offer the full range of services that you get from a main Post Office. Therefore staff don’t need the same training, are cheaper, and more inquisitive about the contents of your packet/parcel in order to make their dull humdrum day remotely interesting. On a plus, each time you buy a stamp from a small franchise you are less likely to be asked if you want to take out other financial products such as a loan, savings account or mortgage.

Might as well get on with it and convert Waterlooville town centre into housing keeping the areas round Waitrose and Matalan as shopping since they seem successful. Properly planned it could work. I visited Havant recently and if anything that seemed even more run down but certainly Emsworth and Petersfield are lovely shopping centres
