Developer’s BAE Site Proposal: Non-Food Retail & maybe Leisure

Friday 4th August 2017 by Steve Mayne

Local developer Hargreaves has submitted proposals for the development of the remainder of the BAE site which currently comprises of a McDonald’s and an under-construction Lidl.

The development proposal is mostly non-food retail. Part of one of the proposed units could possibly become a restaurant or a café and one unit is pencilled in for use as either leisure use or again non-food retail. A couple of the units have open space at the rear which is suggested by the plans could be used by a garden centre or similar. The proposed plans do not mention cinema, bowling alley, ice-rink, planetarium or any other specific leisure activity previously suggested by residents.

As only one of the units is proposed for the potential for leisure, it is unclear how a leisure facility would be viable given that most successful retail/leisure parks such as Gunwharf have multiple leisure activities available as well as a good spread of retail choices.

A development consultation forum is scheduled for 22 August at HBC HQ in Havant where the developer will put their proposals forward to councillors and stakeholders; more details about this can be found on Havant Borough Council’s website.

We certainly do need some leisure activities. Although we intend wouldn’t complain at a garden centre! More shopping will cause the town centre to become more of a 👻 ghost town.

Have they listened to the public at all? No, of course not, the people who will be spending money there are not important, are they!

Oh really, when will developers listen to locals. We need somewhere for our young people to go, cinema, bowling etc would be brilliant. You can have too many eateries, Waterlooville is not like Gunwharf with lovely view s and interesting sites, boats, the sea etc. It needs a practical approach.

Well it’s a fact that the developer views this blog, though the developer may listen, the leisure companies that would provide such services may not listen?

a craft outlet would be good (well for me anyway lol) … or even a SHOP where you could actually buy things like gifts etc … coz there are not many of them in Waterlooville :)

    • Sandy Flynn says

      Friday 4th August 2017 at 23:54

Yes … When I was in the shop today I overheard the sales assistant tell another customer they will be doing craft stuffs … But they have not made the order out yet … So fingers crossed … They did have a box of miscellaneous crafty bits for 50p … I did buy A couple of bits … Well it would be ride not too don’t you think 😊 xx

Let traffic gridlock begin! More houses + more retail outlets = less countryside to run and cycle in and even more pollution than we already have. This area is being over developed – I wish I could move away.
