Waterlooville’s Historic Wellington Pub …. Saved From (total) Demolition!

Saturday 17th February 2018 by Steve Mayne

The Wellington Pub, has been saved from demolition by Havant Borough Council’s Planning department.

After the developer’s proposed of the total demolition of the Wellington Pub was turned down on appeal, a new proposal was submitted. The new proposal from the developer includes the retention of the pub at the ground floor, a partial demolition of the rearward extension, front & rear dormers, and 4 new flats with 8 bedrooms in total. This new proposal has been granted planning permission.

The Havant Borough Council’s Conservation team has the following feedback on the proposal:

“The existing public house is not statutorily or locally listed, although it is of architectural and historic merit. Together with its setting within the site the building does make a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the street scene … Therefore the submitted proposals which show that the building is to be largely retained with its use on the ground floor are welcome. Above the existing billiard room a 2 story extension will be constructed to allow for a further 4 flats and staircase. This extension will be subservient to the main historic building and would not appear dominant. The design also respects the character of the existing building and will appear as a sympathetic addition.”

The retention of the pub is a positive outcome for Waterlooville, well done HBC!

I agree it was a tradey that Swiss Cottage went, but we have to keep trying with all new developments that risk loosing what Waterlooville used to look like. This is a start. The town could be such a vibrant and go to place for foodies and culture we just gotta keep trying.

About Waterlooville yep! Burying their head in the sand about people using public transport rather than having a car! Until public transport is cheap and frequent nobody will get out of their cars! Sorry mini rant for a pet hate 🙂

I was told by a councillor that the parking rules for new houses in Waterlooville Town Center was planned to be discussed at a meeting end of last year. The issue goes away when self driving cars become the norm!
